This position is career-seasonal in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. You may work a minimum of 26 weeks (13 pay periods) but generally not more than 50 weeks (25 pay periods) a year. As of this announcement, the anticipated non-pay status time will be one pay period (two weeks) a year. However, your actual work schedule and period of non-pay can fluctuate from year to year and is contingent upon operational needs and/or weather conditions.

This position is located at Navajo National Monument on the Navajo Indian Reservation in northeastern Arizona.

Duties

Provide front/back country guide services to visitors. The work involves giving talks, interpreting natural and historic features, answering questions, guiding tours and providing miscellaneous services to visitors. Work also requires regular entrance of the monument's ancestral pueblo sites during the summer season for the Keet Seel and Betatakin programs. This requires performing duties with multiple days in the back country which  involves hiking a 16 mile round trip distance with about 30 pounds of food and supplies. The monument's back-country lodging has no running water, phone or internet services except for a radio. Traveling through the Navajo Indian Reservation to the monument's back-country involves contact and communicating with limited English speaking local Navajo. Understanding the Navajo Dine language would be beneficial. During the off-season months will assist in organizing, planning and preparing for school and interpretive education programs, writing projects, etc. May also assist with search and rescue duties.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work requires standing for long periods of time, walking for long distances, climbing and descending steep inclines, bending and lifting moderately heavy items. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both indoors and outdoors resulting in exposure to a variety of weather conditions.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION: Navajo National Monument is located on a remote/isolated sandstone plateau in northeastern Arizona on the Navajo Indian Reservation. This upland area is semi-arid within a pinion and juniper forest which include semi-desert plants and animals and isolated pockets of alpine timber in nearby canyons. Deep canyons originate near each of the three separated units of the monument where well preserved ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings are found. Headquarters is at a elevation of about 7,200 feet with daytime temperatures ranging from 85-95 degrees Fahrenheit during the summer and 25-35 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Limited shopping and medical facilities are available in Kayenta, Arizona (35 miles distance) and Page, Arizona (90 miles distance). Major shopping, medical and dental facilities are available in Flagstaff, Arizona and Farmington, New Mexico which are both approximately 150 miles distance from the monument.
Government housing is not available. Off-reservation, non-government, non-tribal housing is located about  two hours driving distance from the park.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Wednesday, July 05, 2017. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

GS-05
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-04 level in the federal service OR a four year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with courses related to the position OR a combination of specialized experience and directly-related education.
Specialized Experience: Is experience that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical or scientific information or oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, park guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work.
Education: Four years of education above high school (120 semester hours or 180 quarter hours) leading to a bachelor's degree with 24 semester hours of course work related to the position such as American history, science or public speaking.
Combination: An equivalent combination of directly-related education and specialized experience (as noted above) can qualify you for this position. Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements. Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to one year of specialized experience. As an example ---- six months of the specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement) and three years of college study from an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) which included at least 12 semester hours of related coursework (50% of the related coursework required).

EDUCATIONTo qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking or other equivalent documentation. Transcripts do not need to be official but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify then you will need to provide official transcripts before you enter on duty.

Requirements
1. If new to Federal Civil Service, you will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.
2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
3. You may be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid state issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle.

4. Will work weekends and holidays.

5. This is a drug-testing designated position since you may assist with search and rescue.
