This position(s) is a full-time TEMPORARY appointment, not-to-exceed one year with potential to be extended for an additional one year for a maximum of two years based on agency needs and potential funding.

Duties

Major Duties:  As a uniformed employee of the National Park Service, incumbent serves a front line representative of the agency. In many instances, the incumbent is the first and only contact the visiting public has with a NPS employee. Incumbent works at the park visitor center and other contact stations and in the field. The primary purpose of this position is to provide guide services to visitors. The work involves giving pre-established talks, interpreting natural and historical features, answering a variety of visitors' questions, guiding tours and providing a wide range of miscellaneous services to visitors. The guide is responsible for providing current, accurate information concerning the NPS and other surrounding areas of interest, explaining the area's recreational opportunities, including NPS interpretive services and hiking trails. Additionally, the incumbent will operate a government vehicle.
Physical Demands:  Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances, bending and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion may be required.  Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of personal contacts, occasional emergency responses and repetitive nature of interpretive programs.
Work Environment:  Work is performed indoors an outdoor areas resulting in exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind and direct sunlight.
Position Location:  Petersburg National Battlefield is located approximately 20 miles south of Richmond, VA. It commemorates the 9 ½ month siege that took place during the Civil War. Petersburg National Battlefield consists of four sites spread across three local government jurisdictions. Each site has its own unique historic story. Summers usually average 85-98 degrees with humidity. Winters usually average 35-55 degrees with frigid nights and a couple of snow falls a year. Schools, malls, and medical facilities are available. Incumbent must provide their own transportation when reporting to duty.  There is no public transit available for Park specific locations.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must demonstrate that you possess either the qualifying experience and/or education described below. Equivalent combinations of experience and education may be used to qualify.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs), competencies to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.  One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-04 level. Specialized Experience is experience that involved oral presentation of historical, scientific, or program information to groups; or developing and/or revising technical, historical, or scientific information for oral presentation to groups. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to, Park Guide or tour leader; naturalist; environmental educator or teacher; or other similar work. OR: SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:  Successful completion of a four year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with major study in American history, science, and/or public speaking, or a bachelor's degree supplemented by at least 24 semester hours in American history, science, and/or public speaking. OR: AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF QUALIFYING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

You must include dates of employment (month and year) and hours worked per week to receive credit for your work experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. You will not receive credit for experience that does not indicate the exact hours worked per week or is listed as "varies". Part-time hours are prorated.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
