About the Position:
The Medical Support Assistant position is in the Directorate for Medicine, Department of Executive Medicine Service at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center located in Bethesda, MD. The Executive Medicine Service is a primary care outpatient clinic that provides our Nation's and Military's leaders and family members with health care and support services that ensure and maintain their optimal performance. These services are provided in an expeditious manner that is sensitive to the extraordinary time, privacy and security demands of their ranks and positions. The Medical Support Assistants are the first contact our distinguished visitors have when arriving to the clinic. This position greets, verifies patients identity, and checks each patient into the automated healthcare system. This practice has a strong emphasis on electronic and telephonic communication with patients. Providing an outstanding patient experience during every interaction is the goal in this practice.

Duties
You will enter, manipulate, and/or retrieve information and data from automated systems. Maintain and monitor patient appointment schedules for the unit. Schedule patient appointments into an automated system. Receive patients and visitors in person and on the telephone. Record and relay messages and/or redirect calls. Obtain identifying information and determine the nature of the visit/call. Provide information regarding unit, clinic, and hospital policies, procedures, and locations to patients, family members, staff, etc., or refers to other resources for difficult questions or concerns. Attempt to resolve complaints of a local administrative nature, and refer other complaints to the appropriate authorities. Maintain all patient records, both electronic or hardcopy, according to regulation ensuring each entry contains proper patient and health care provider identification. Correctly file original medical documentation in the patient record and copies of medical documentation into research files. On patient discharge, transfer, or completion of appointment, verify and assures that the record of the patient treatment is administratively complete. Responsible for the clerical duties inherent to the in-processing, care, and out-processing of outpatients and guests.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below.
Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: Successful completion of four full years above high school. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-05: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. For this option, only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience. To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of undergraduate education in excess of 60 hours (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
