The Selective Service System is an independent agency whose mission is to (1) maintain a system that can promptly and efficiently furnish untrained manpower for induction into the Armed Forces during a national emergency and (2) provide an Alternative Service Program to men classified as conscientious objectors during a draft.

This position is part of the Data Management Center, Selective Service System. The incumbent will be responsible for opening, sorting and batching documents in support of the Registration Program; operates a variety of mail processing equipment to print, assemble and control computer generated correspondence; manually assembles a variety of material for bulk and low volume mailings; meters mail; assists in document inventory control; prepares records for microfilming; and assists with material handling and microfilm functions when necessary.

Duties

As a MAIL PROCESSING ASSISTANT at the GS-0303-6 ,some of your typical work assignments may include under supervision:
Specific duties and responsibilities include the following:
  • Follows all relevant safety rules, regulations and standard operating procedures. Utilizes knowledge of and must comply with all safety rules and regulations to ensure that work progresses in a safe manner. Provides or receives training to ensure that all safety practices are applied.
  • Based on duties assigned, the incumbent may be requires to do repetitive motion for processing incoming and outgoing correspondence. The position requires stooping, reaching, kneeling, crouching and bending; lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds for short distances, and occasional lifting of heavier objects.
  • Ability to use and maintain equipment, operate a motor vehicle and work outside with cargo under varying weather conditions.
  • Receives, opens, sorts, and batches forms used to establish and maintain computer data bases. Routes documents to appropriate work areas.
  • Prepares documents for microfilming, to include staple pulling, repairing rips, photocopying, etc
  • Manually assembles material for mailing.
