This position is located in the SSA National Hearing Center at 200 West Adams Street, Chicago, IL 60606

NOTE: This position is being filled on a full-time, permanent basis. Additional selections may be made within six months from the closing date of this announcement.

Legal Assistants at SSA's Office of Disability Adjudication and Review, National Hearing Center, provide legal and technical support to Administrative Law Judges and other technical and professional positions in the processing of entitlement cases pursuant to Titles II and XVI of the Social Security Act, as amended, at the administrative appeals level.

ANNOUNCEMENT MAY CLOSE PRIOR TO THE CLOSING DATE OF JUNE 26, 2017, IF A SUFFICIENT NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS IS RECEIVED. ANNOUNCEMENT WILL CLOSE UPON RECEIPT OF 100 APPLICATIONS OR ON JUNE 26, 2017, WHICHEVER COMES FIRST.

Duties

Reviews and analyzes the case to ensure sufficiency of evidence or documentation, and to ensure that the case is ready for hearing. Is responsible for obtaining both medical and non-medical evidence needed for the hearing. This includes contact with the claimant and/or representative to secure current evidence of record or to independently request current evidence from a medical source through the State agency. On own initiative, may request a consultative examination if it is deemed necessary to complete the file. If the Request for Hearing (R/H) is untimely filed, contacts claimant or representative to secure information to decide whether good cause exists to extend the time for filing the R/H, or whether an ALJ dismissal should be issued. Drafts dismissal order for the ALJ if a determination is made that the R/H is untimely filed or if it does not meet sufficient legal and regulatory requirements. Identifies other discrepancies and/or deficiencies in the file and resolves by obtaining information, documentation and other pertinent data required to process the case.
