Summary

 

You will serve as Digital Imaging Specialist, performing duties associated with the digitization and reformatting of original archival records and photographic intermediates for preservation and access, managing digital files, creating technical and administrative metadata, and producing physical media copies. These positions are located within the Archives 1 Processing Section, Research Services Textual Records Division located in Washington DC.

Duties

Major duties include:
Works with original archival records such as textual documents, photographs, maps and technical drawings, and historical artifacts having a very high monetary and intrinsic value and are frequently in fragile condition.
Skill and knowledge of appropriate handling methods to prevent damage or further deterioration to the records.
Reformat original archival records and photographic intermediates using digital imaging technology to produce image files and various hard copy output such as facsimile prints on paper.
Work on a range of projects, including routine digitization, special requests, and complex and difficult projects.
Create administrative and technical metadata and may, in some situations, create descriptive metadata in accordance with archival standards; assists in identifying and defining metadata requirements for specific digitization projects; and conducts quality assurance and quality control inspection of work to ensure that lab standards are being maintained.
Operate computer based digital imaging systems using a broad range of hardware and software applications for scanning, calibration, image processing, hardcopy output, and file storage/management in order to achieve a desired result. Operates digital cameras and digital copy systems.
Keep abreast of relevant developments in the digital imaging profession, as well as the hardware, software, and services provided by vendors. Assists in examining current workflows and implementing adjustments as needed to maximize efficiency and make improvements to current practices.
Provide internal digital imaging training and guidance to Textual Processing Branch and other NARA staff; represents the archival unit by participating in meetings and providing tours to lab visitors.

Qualifications

Candidates must have had one (1) year of specialized experience at the grade 9level to qualify for the grade 11 position. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform successfully the duties of the position as described above, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled.
Examples of specialized experience for GS-11 include activities associated with establishing scan production and quality control requirements for digitization projects; managing, implementing, or consulting on imaging projects to convert a range of paper document types and other media to digital formats; using color management software to produce custom profiles to calibrate scanners, digital cameras and printers; overseeing projects involving the preparation and converting of textual records, photographic materials,  microfilm, artwork and three-dimensional artifacts into digital formats; configuring, using, and maintaining digital imaging hardware such as computers, scanners, and recording devices; and a background with high-resolution overhead capture systems, including Hasselbad and Phase One.
OR
A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, or three full years of progressively higher level graduate education above the master's degree from an accredited educational institution leading to a degree in Photography, Graphic Design, Digital Collection Management, or Library Science that has demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position.
Note: If you wish to qualify for the position based on education, you must submit copies of your college transcripts.  Graduates of foreign schools must have their academic credentials evaluated through a recognized credential evaluating institution.
