About the Agency

The mission of the Government Accountability Office (GAO) is to support the Congress in meeting its constitutional responsibilities and to help improve the performance and ensure the accountability of the federal government for the benefit of the American people. GAO provides Congress with timely information that is objective, fact-based, nonpartisan, non-ideological, fair, and balanced.

This position is being staffed by the following offices within the GAO:


  • Office of International Affairs and Trade, which supports the Congress and GAO by assisting the global community in addressing challenging issues by producing objective research and developing practical solutions to improve global prosperity and peace.
  • The Natural Resources and Environment team is responsible for GAO’s assessments of federal efforts to manage our nation’s land and water resources, protect the environment, ensure food safety, manage agricultural programs, ensure a reliable and environmentally sound energy supply, meet the nation’s science challenges and address US and international nuclear security and cleanup.

Duties

The duties of this position include providing routine to complex administrative services to support GAO TEAMS (IAT/NRE) mission and operations.

 Maintains internal engagement processing systems to meet specific team needs. Determines data to be included, sources of data, either hard copy files or other automated systems, and enters and analyzes data and produces reports. Ensures that office filing/database systems conform to agency-wide records management regulations, rules, and policies. Develops and maintains computer databases and office filing systems. Helps teams ensure quality processing steps are followed.

 Using appropriate software or automated systems, prepares a variety of correspondence relating to team engagements such as Job Initiation, Commitment, Transmittal, and Notification Letters. Adapts formats and ensures that standard language and templates are correctly used for the specific task. 

 Analyzes current, new, and revised administrative procedural requirements/policies related to office operations. Recommends changes in administrative policies to resolve issues related to efficiency, effectiveness, or customer service.

 Performs a variety of general administrative duties including reception, general typing, copy services, mail and records maintenance/coordination, and time and attendance. Determines administrative operations problems, ascertaining their cause or source to resolve administrative operations problems.

 Advises the internal agency staff on time frames, status of individual jobs, and other relevant information on the production of GAO reports and other publications.

 Maintains calendars for assigned staff, scheduling appointments based on knowledge program operations and of staff member’s priorities. Arranges meetings, contacting attendees, securing space or arranging for audio and video conferencing.

 Advises and guides management and staff regarding administrative support rules, procedures, and operations related to office acquisitions, space and facilities, human resource and payroll processing, travel, mail services and telecommunications. Reviews authorizations for staff travel for accuracy and completeness.

 Reviews administrative practices and procedures for correctness, logical application, and efficiency. Reports problem areas to supervisor and participates in developing improvements.

 Serves as a customer contact point for general administrative inquiries, requests, or questions. Coordinates administrative activities to ensure efficient and smooth operation, effective services, and quality customer support/service.

 Provides support for human capital functions including performance management, awards, training and other areas. Utilizes automated systems to generate and complete documents and forms or prepares manual forms. Monitors actions through team review and through processing by GAO offices. Enters data and updates systems. Analyzes manual and automated information and prepares reports. Provides advice to team management and staff on systems and processing rules and procedures.
