About the Position:Located in the scenic Hudson River Valley, only 50 miles from New York City, the US Military Academy at West Point is a four-year academic institution, a nationally-renowned historic site, and the oldest continuously occupied military post in America. The undergraduates, known as cadets, are commissioned as officers in the US Army upon graduation. You can watch them in parades or competing as intercollegiate athletes in a wide range of sporting events. As a military installation, West Point is a small, self-contained city with housing for the military stationed here in support of the Academy, a Department of Public Works to maintain the roads, grounds and facilities, a library, military hospital, fire department, chapels, and restaurants. West Point civilian employees have access to Eisenhower Hall Theatre, the Hudson Valleys premier performing arts center, and to recreational facilities, such as an 18-hole Golf Course and Ski Slope.

Duties

You will serve as a Security Guard in the Directorate of Emergency Services at Fort Hamilton, New York, with responsibility for controlling access of vehicles, visitors, and pedestrians into military installations. Screen employees, visitors, and contractor personnel for visitor access on military installations. Operate the National Crime Information Center terminal in accordance with federal and state laws. Control, prepare, and issue identification badges, cards, and passes that allow access to the installation. Deny access to unauthorized personnel or those who do not meet authorized entry criteria. Make instantaneous decisions regarding use of deadly force, operate Active Vehicle Barrier when required, and alert appropriate officials of apparent security violations. Conduct foot or vehicle patrol of perimeters, roadways, parking and other high traffic areas as well as interior of shops, storage administrative and other structures. Conduct traffic stops at the Installation Access Control Point for safety and security checks.
Perform installation access, usage of physical access control equipment and visitor access on military installations. Safeguard Government personnel, information, operations, and critical assets in accordance with a wide variety of Federal rules and agency/local regulations or policies.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience required: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify based on your experience, your resume must describe at least one year of specialized experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as work that involved controlling access of vehicles, visitors and pedestrians into a facility such as a military installation; experience using automated systems to query and verify suitability for visitor entry into a facility such as a military installation; experience transcribing data using special codes in accordance with federal and state regulations (e.g. style codes, manufacturer's codes, wanted or missing persons, etc.); and experience dealing with difficult customers who may be found ineligible for access. Such experience must have provided a knowledge of protective systems and techniques. Acceptable experience includes service in the Armed Forces or Coast Guard that involved the performance of guard duties on a regular or intermittent basis. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency (knowledge, skills, abilities) in the following areas:

• Knowledge of security guard duties.
• Skill in traffic control.
• Skill in performing access control operations.
• Ability to communicate orally.

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

• Must be proficient in the use of assigned firearms/weapons, pass an initial qualification, and must qualify semi-annually.
• Must undergo and pass annual medical exams of physical, emotional and mental stability.
• Must successfully complete security guard training.
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and First Aid training.
• May be required to wear chemical protection masks, gloves, and other protective equipment, and may be required to be certified in the use of aerosol irritants and baton.
• Required to pass entry level and annual re-certification of standard Army physical fitness/agility test.
• Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
• Must wear prescribed uniform.
