About the Position:
The Inpatient Pharmacy Technician is a pharmacy technician in the high-paced inpatient division of Pharmacy Service and performs under the general oversight of a pharmacist or the on-call pharmacist or other licensed healthcare provider. In addition to performing all duties of a Pharmacy Technician, this position is responsible for ensuring optimal and safe medication use.

Duties
As a Pharmacy Technician in the Inpatient Pharmacy, you will neatly and completely transcribe necessary information to a patient's profile in the computer, to enable the pharmacy service to provide for the medication needs of the patient. Select the correct unit does of medication for loading into the automated dispensing cabinet and/or into the patient specific bin. You will correctly interpret doctor's orders for intravenous (IV) admixtures and sterile products; make required calculations and conversions to prepare strengths and doses of medications ordered. You will inspect prescription labels; maintain adequate levels of working stock; receive and process orders for controlled substances, determine type of substance, strength, dosage and quantity of medication prescription to be dispensed; and operate pharmacy equipment.

Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Experience required: To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as: preparing (compounding) intravenous (IV) admixtures/solutions using aseptic techniques, within an inpatient pharmacy; preparing and delivering unit dose medications; receiving and preparing narcotics/controlled substances in accordance with federal laws; and operating/maintaining automated dispensing cabinets (such as Pyxis). This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you may qualify if your education meets the definitions below:
Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-06: Successful completion of one-half (1/2) year of graduate education directly related to the work of a Pharmacy Technician, such as Pharmacy. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts with your application package.)
Combination of Experience and Education Substitution for Specialized Experience for GS-06: If you have some, but not all, of the experience or education described above, you may still qualify by combining the amount of creditable experience and education that you possess. To compute, divide your total months of qualifying experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of graduate education b 9. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts with your application package.)
Only degrees from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education are acceptable to meet positive education requirements or to substitute education for experience.
