The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to (10) temporary positions at Everglades National Park, Florida. Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. Anticipated Entry on Duty: November/2017.
The Flamingo District is in the southern part of the park on the edge of Florida Bay. It is approximately 52 miles from the nearest grocery store, bank, and town (Florida City/Homestead). There is a small marina store located at Flamingo where snacks can be purchased. Winter in Flamingo provides some of the best bird watching opportunities in the United States as well as excellent wildlife viewing and outstanding wilderness experiences.
The Gulf Coast district is located on the northwestern side of the park, and includes much of the Ten Thousand Islands. The visitor center is in Everglades City; a small town 35 miles southeast of Naples. The town has several restaurants, a small grocery store, gas stations, and an outlet of the county library. Surrounded by water, Everglades City is a great place for boating and fishing. The waters and islands are home to dolphins, manatees, and shore birds and offer outstanding wilderness experiences.
There is no public transit available either to the park or inside park boundaries or to Everglades City. Winter temperatures average between 66 and 80 degrees. Evening temperatures can drop into the 50s or occasionally 40s. Warm mild weather makes the area perfect habitat for venomous animals, poisonous plants and stinging or biting insects. Mosquito levels are lower during the winter season.

Duties


Independently researches, develops, and presents interpretive programs such as boat tours, canoe/kayak tours, talks, walks, PowerPoint presentations, and various other programs about park resources. Interpretive programs often cover complex and controversial natural history and cultural themes. Programs employ appropriate interpretive techniques and devices geared to the characteristics and interests of particular audiences.
Independently operates visitor center to provide visitor information and orientation. Operates a cash register and credit card machine, sells/issues park passes and federal recreation passports, issues backcountry camping permits, and conducts sales for the cooperating association. Completes shift reports to verify monies collected, accountable stock sold, and all machine transactions. Coordinates with other NPS offices, concessionaires, and essential cooperators. Provides interpretive and informational support services such as cleaning and maintaining equipment, designing interpretive displays, maintaining bulletin boards, clerical work, and keeping statistical records.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work involves extensive periods of standing and walking, in some cases over rough surfaces or inclines, carrying backpacks, tools, rescue equipment, etc.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is performed in settings in which there is regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness, e.g., high or low temperatures, confined spaces or adverse weather conditions.
