Duties

These positions are located within the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at the Washington DC VA Medical Center in Washington, DC. The Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing assignments include, but are not limited to, the collecting, processing and decontamination of soiled supplies; instruments and equipment; instrument preparation and stylization; medical equipment maintenance;, receiving, storing, and distribution of medical and surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment The section is comprised of four main areas of responsibility, decontamination, preparation, endoscope reprocessing and surgery preparation and each area is rotated on a weekly basis. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Decontamination/Processing:

• Cleans and decontaminates all critical and semi-critical reusable equipment and instruments;
• Examines the items visually for damage, deterioration or imperfections such as rust, pitting, and cracks;
• Inspects medical equipment to determine whether it is operating correctly and ensures items were reassembled correctly after cleaning;
• Collects the complete range of reusable medical and surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment form the Operating Room, Dental, wards, and other specialty clinics;
• Disassembles and decontaminates complex equipment when interval mechanisms become soiled, then reassembles for further processing;
• Operates steam cleaning equipment, ultrasonic cleaning equipment, washer sterilizer, endoscopic reprocessor and washer/decontaminator;
• Ensures manufacture operating/cleaning instructions are available and followed specifically for all Reusuable Medical Equipment (RME);
• Understands the chemical characteristics of a variety of cleaning and sterilizing agents and techniques to the proper agent will be selected to process the material at hand;
• Explains proper function of equipment to using services;

Preparation/Sterilization:

• Assembles, packages, wraps, and sterilizes the medical supply items;
• Packages items individually (e.g. scissors, tubing, gauze) or assembles into trays and sets;
• Tests conditions of supply items such as scissors for smooth and easy opening;
• Determines the method of sterilization, applies a class five (f) chemical integrator, labels the package with proper name of the item and loads the item in the appropriate sterilizer;
• Arranges items on tray in logical manner that permits effective penetration of the sterilizing medium and prevents damage to points, blades, and delicate instruments;
• Determines proper wrapping material;
• Determines the proper sterilizing methods, places the carrier containing the supply items in the sterilizer, operates the sterilizer, and includes in sterilization cycles any control tests (Bowie-Dick air removal, biological spore) according to established procedures;
• Prepares the full range of instrument trays and stets used in all surgical cases and prepares the surgical case carts based on the surgical procedure to be performed;
• Performs comprehensive sterilization testing procedures utilizing line microorganisms and chemical reactive testing; and,
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Work Schedule: 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm. Day/Evening rotation.

Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-6 level, you must meet one of the following requirements:

Experience: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given you the particular knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing. Specialized experience includes processing, assembling, trouble-shooting, preparing, decontamination, sterilizing, storing, and issuing sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment. You must possess knowledge of the technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning, preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaners, and gas and steam sterilizers. Your work would have been assigned by a supervisor on a continuing or rotational basis and your work would have been completed independently according to accepted work procedures. Any problems or unusual situations that arise would have been reviewed by your supervisor or, if problems occur on shift or weekend assignments, independently resolved by you through negotiation and consultation with other medical personnel. Specialized experience may include work as an Operating Room Technician, Surgical Technician, or Medical Instrument Technician where you were responsible for performing these duties. NOTE: Experience must be fully documented on your resume and must include job title, duties, month and year start/end dates AND hours worked per week. ~OR~
Education: Successfully completed at least one-half year of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a Bachelor's degree) with course work that is directly related to the Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing position. Related education includes medical supply processing, storage, and distribution; sterile supplies, operating room, and surgical technician courses; or other fields directly related to the position or an internship that is directly related to the work of the Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing position. Some areas that may be related to this field are nursing, medical technology, medicine, clinical laboratory, biological sciences, microbiology, etc. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Combination: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience, as described above, may be used to meet total experience requirements. Physical Requirements: The work of this position requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for prolonged periods of time, carrying medical supply items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequent bending and stretching/reaching, and pushing fully-loaded medical supply carts weighing as much as 750 pounds which must be negotiated up inclines and over rises, or positioning them on sterilizer track rails. The work requires dexterity in such tasks as inserting small rods into needle openings or precisely aligning component parts while reassembling medical equipment. Tension and stress are induced by the critical nature of producing work results critical to patient care on pre-established time frames and in emergent situations. Workdays can be lengthened without notice by emergency surgery instrumentation needs.
On a regular and recurring basis, the work involves alternation between a contaminated environment, with its own exposure risks and discomforts, and a carefully controlled clean environment. Both areas have their own special clothing requirements, which can be uncomfortably warm.
Work environment is the decontamination area consists of daily exposure to blood and body fluids; exposure to items contaminated by patients with contagious disease, and is classified by exposure as Category 1. The person in this position works with and near equipment that has moving parts, is noisy, generates het and emits toxic fumes and is subject to burns from hot items, cuts from contaminated and clean instruments, and dermatitis from frequent contact with cleaning agents. Regularly works around body fluids, mucous, excretions and bits of tissue, some of which is foul smelling. Strong, unpleasant odors are often encountered while processing certain items.
The person in this position must comply with special safety and health precautions and use personal protective equipment including hair covering, clean shoe covering, gloves, impervious gowns, impervious shoe covers, and hearing protection.
