Duties
These positions are located within the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) at the Washington DC VA Medical Center in Washington, DC. The Medical Supply Technician - Sterile Processing assignments include, but are not limited to, the collecting, processing and decontamination of soiled supplies; instruments and equipment; instrument preparation and stylization; medical equipment maintenance;, receiving, storing, and distribution of medical and surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment The section is comprised of four main areas of responsibility, decontamination, preparation, endoscope reprocessing and surgery preparation and each area is rotated on a weekly basis. Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Decontamination/Processing:
Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

Decontamination/Processing:
- Cleans and decontaminates all critical and semi-critical reusable equipment and instruments;
- Examines the items visually for damage, deterioration or imperfections such as rust, pitting, and cracks;
- Inspects medical equipment to determine whether it is operating correctly and ensures items were reassembled correctly after cleaning;
- Collects the complete range of reusable medical and surgical supplies, instruments, and equipment form the Operating Room, Dental, wards, and other specialty clinics;
- Disassembles and decontaminates complex equipment when interval mechanisms become soiled, then reassembles for further processing;
- Operates steam cleaning equipment, ultrasonic cleaning equipment, washer sterilizer, endoscopic reprocessor and washer/decontaminator;
- Ensures manufacture operating/cleaning instructions are available and followed specifically for all Reusuable Medical Equipment (RME);
- Understands the chemical characteristics of a variety of cleaning and sterilizing agents and techniques to the proper agent will be selected to process the material at hand;
- Explains proper function of equipment to using services;
- Assembles, packages, wraps, and sterilizes the medical supply items;
- Packages items individually (e.g. scissors, tubing, gauze) or assembles into trays and sets;
- Tests conditions of supply items such as scissors for smooth and easy opening;
- Determines the method of sterilization, applies a class five (f) chemical integrator, labels the package with proper name of the item and loads the item in the appropriate sterilizer;
- Arranges items on tray in logical manner that permits effective penetration of the sterilizing medium and prevents damage to points, blades, and delicate instruments;
- Determines proper wrapping material;
- Determines the proper sterilizing methods, places the carrier containing the supply items in the sterilizer, operates the sterilizer, and includes in sterilization cycles any control tests (Bowie-Dick air removal, biological spore) according to established procedures;
- Prepares the full range of instrument trays and stets used in all surgical cases and prepares the surgical case carts based on the surgical procedure to be performed;
- Performs comprehensive sterilization testing procedures utilizing line microorganisms and chemical reactive testing; and,
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
