Duties

These positions are located within Nutrition and Food Services (NFS) of the Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System (GLA.) The selectees will be assigned to work at the West Los Angeles Healthcare System in the Sanitation/Dishwashing Section. This position will be required to work on weekends and holidays. Some of the duties of this position include (but are not limited to):

• Dishwashing, including patient meal trays and pots and pans
• Food Service cart washing
• Ensures equipment and dishware is stored and handled safely
• Assembling meal trays
• Cleaning and sanitizing of food production and service areas
• Cleaning and sanitation of food production and service equipment

Work Schedule: 5 days a week (20 hours per week) including weekends and holidays; 3:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours/week). The salary listed represents full-time employment and will be pro-rated based on the actual number of hours worked each pay-period. Likewise, benefits and time-off accrual will also be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element (WG-2 and higher only; screen-outs are not applicable to WG-1). Applicants who appear to meet the screen out element are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated from consideration. The potential eligibles are rated against the remainder of the job elements. While a specific length of training and experience is not required, your responses to the questionnaire must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume.

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The FSW at this grade level performs work requiring continual standing and walking, and frequent stooping, reaching, pushing, and bending. The FSW may also be required to work for long periods using repetitive motion, especially in the Sanitation and Trayline areas. They frequently lift or move objects and push/pull carts weighing (or requiring the force of) up to 40 pounds unassisted, and occasionally lift or move objects weighing over 40 pounds with the assistance of other workers. May be required to perform heavy work, such as scouring and scrubbing pots, pans, or other food service equipment. The WG-2 FSW working in the Ingredient Control unit will push heavy carts and trucks during unloading, storing, and delivering food and supplies, and will regularly lift or move objects over 40 pounds with the assistance of pallet jacks or other workers. To minimize risk of work-related injury, the WG-2 FSW adheres to safe, ergonomic work practices, including bending at knees to lift, pushing (not pulling) carts or other equipment, use of appropriate PPEs, and following all established safety standards. The work is performed in areas where the steam and heat from cooking and dishwashing equipment often cause uncomfortably high temperatures and humidity. Other areas are kept cool to assure food is assembled under appropriate conditions to assure food safety. The work area is well lighted but usually noisy from food service activities, and there is danger of slipping on floors where food or beverages have been dropped. Regularly exposed to hot food and liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot and cold working surfaces, and extreme temperature changes when entering walk-in refrigeration or freezing units.
