About the Position:
As a Deckhand assigned to the Dredge JADWIN, Operations Division, River Operations Branch, Navigation Section, you will be assigned to accomplish a combination of deckhand tasks in connection with the making up and breaking of tows.

Duties

As a Deckhand assigned to the Dredge JADWIN, Operations Division, River Operations Branch, Navigation Section, your duties will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Handling lines, wires, or rigging to secure barges or other floating plant in tow.
• Greasing moving deck equipment such as capstans, tow winch, or electric cranes to ensure working condition.
• Operating outboard motor boat to secure buoys.
• Operating capstans, small electric cranes, and/or winches.
• Cleaning the vessel, to include removing garbage, scrubbing decks, and railings.
• Assisting other craftsmen with maintenance and repairs.
• Driving trucks from 3/4 ton to 4-ton capacity to transport personnel and materials

Travel Required

• 50% or Greater
• Travel to other duty locations is required at least 50% of the time.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Deckhand assignments require heavy physical effort frequently requiring walking, climbing, working in cramped and tiring positions and lifting and carrying items weighing over 50 pounds. Motor Vehicle operation assignments involve moderate physical effort required in operation of the vehicle in reaching, banding, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort is frequently required in handling objects weighing up to 20 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing over 50 pounds while loading and unloading cargo.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Deckhand assignments require, working on steel docks of barges, towboats, and dredges where the incumbent is exposed to all types of weather conditions, temperature extremes, potential of falling overboard and drowning, and potential of bruises and broken bones when working in industrial type operations. Motor vehicle assignments require working outside with occasional exposure to bad weather while loading and unloading vehicles. Is subject to cuts, bruises, drowning, and broke bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles. Is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents while driving in all types of traffic and weather.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence of specialized experience which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position, must be supported by detailed descriptions of your experience on your resume or OF-612. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C ( http://ift.tt/1fuPbMF ).

SCREEN OUT ELEMENT: Applicants must indicate in their resume that they meet the Screen Out Element: Ability to do the work of a Deckhand without more than normal supervision. Duties include: Conducting channel patrol activities, outboard motor operation, deck equipment repair, driving trucks or other vehicles, general maintenance and housekeeping on a floating plant.
