The HR Customer Services and Solutions group is currently accepting applications to fill up to 3 temporary positions at Zion National Park.  Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time. Appointments under this announcement are eligible for rehire and/or extension (when initial appointment is less than 1039 hours) if workload and funding allow. Anticipated Entry on Duty: June, 2017
Zion National Park is located in southwestern Utah. Daytime temperatures average 90 to 100 in the summer and 55 in the winter. Nighttime lows range from 70 in the summer to 30 in the winter. Minimal shopping is available in Springdale, Utah located two (2) miles from Park Headquarters. A Full range of shopping, medical, dental, religious and recreational facilities are available in Hurricane, (25 miles), St. George, (45 miles), and in Cedar City, Utah (63 miles). Elementary school (grades K-6) is available in Springdale (closest town to the park) with bus service provided. Junior high and high school is available in Hurricane, with bus service provided. Dixie State University is located in St. George and Southern Utah University is located in Cedar City.
The Kolob Canyons District  is located in New Harmony, Utah and is considered a Wilderness back country District of Zion National Park with a 6-mile scenic drive. It is located 18 miles south of Cedar City, Utah on I-15.
This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens.
This announcement may be used to fill additional positions if identical vacancies occur within 90 days of the issue date of the referral certificate.

Duties


The employee serves as a front-line representative of the park providing quality customer service by greeting visitors, collecting and accounting for fees, and disseminating information. The employee will staff multiple high volume fee collection entrance stations and control traffic for oversize vehicles at the Zion-Mt. Carmel Tunnel.  The employee work schedule will rotate between three entrance stations, the tunnel, remit office, and two campgrounds.  Additional duties may include other visitor management related services such as traffic and parking control,  campground and trail patrols.

Physical Demands: Standing for long periods of time, bending, lifting of moderately heavy items, repetitive motions, walking on uneven terrain, hiking in the backcountry if appropriate, and sedentary work is required.  Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to a high volume of personal contacts, some of which are negative in nature, and the responsibility of dealing with large amounts of money.

Work Environment:  Employee will be exposed to extremes of temperature (105-110 degrees during summer months, below freezing in winter), direct sunlight, wind, rain, snow, and carbon monoxide.  Work is performed outdoors, in roadways, in small outdoor structures with open windows, at a visitor center contact areas, and in an office environment. Some work is performed alone in isolated locations.
