Summary

About the Agency

This Museum Technician, GS-1016-05 Full-Time temporary position not-to-exceed 1039 regular hours (about 6 months) in a service year. Position may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs. Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years. The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for Fire Island National Seashore is March through October, but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: June 2017.

Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.

Duties

Serves as a Museum Technician for park's Museum collections with responsibilities for the care, condition and maintenance of museum objects on display and in storage. Performs housekeeping duties in exhibit and storage areas. Performs minor technical cleaning of museum objects in storage and display areas. Produces ICMS Catalog Records for cultural and natural history materials in accordance with Departmental, Regional and Park guidelines. Performs inventories of museum collections of cataloged collections. Maintains cataloging, indexing, and cross-reference systems for cataloged and uncataloged materials. Compiles data on collection and collection management needs, including updating of ICMS records, Collection Condition Survey and Collection Management Plan. Properly uses and maintains cataloging equipment and materials. Maintains environmental monitoring equipment, environmental monitoring program and all materials, supplies and records for monitoring program. Assists Seashore's Museum and Interpretive staff in the design, production and installation of temporary exhibits.

Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the GS-5 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement. Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.

QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.

Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 in the federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.

OR Education: Four years of education above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to this position.

OR a combination: Equivalent combinations of education and experience equaling 100% are qualifying. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. In order to receive credit for experience, your resume must clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the number of hours worked per week.

Credit for experience is given on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited on a part-time ratio, i.e., working 20 hours per week for two months equals one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime. In describing the nature of your duties (your experience), please be clear and concise. We will not make assumptions regarding your experience.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
This position has a mixed work schedule based on the varying workload, and your work schedule is subject to change from part-time to full-time to on-call as workload dictates.
