POSITION INFORMATION:  This recruitment will be used to fill seasonal appointments. These appointments are not to exceed 1039 hours in a twelve month period, although positions may be terminated sooner or extended depending on management needs.  This is a full-time position and is required to work holidays, evenings, and weekends.  Those selected from this job announcement may be entitled to be re-employment eligibility in future years if all requirements have been met; although there is no guarantee.
WORK SCHEDULE:  Full-time, Maxi-Flex schedule.

Duties

Performs routine trail maintenance, rehabilitation and construction of graded foot trails. Assist higher grade employees or work leader in performing masonry work, primarily dry stone, in the construction, stabilization, and maintenance of historic and non-historic structures, mostly on the Park trail system. Assist with carpentry work on trail structures such as log checks, foot-bridges, multi-use bridges, corrals, hitch rails, and boardwalks. Work includes building, repairing, and maintaining erosion control of structures, retaining walls, tread surface, and reblazing of trails; park boundary line maintenance, removal of vegetation growth and fallen rock and tree obstructions from trails. The work occurs in high visitor use areas, foot use trails in remote backcountry areas, and trails in designated Wilderness areas. Trail work is performed with a variety of hand tools including shovels, picks, fire rakes, swing blades (grass whip), McLeods, pulaskis, rock bars, cross-cut saws, wheelbarrows, grip hoist, etc., and small power equipment such as chainsaws, week trimmers, rock drills and jack hammers. Operates vehicles (sometimes with towed trailers) in the performance of assigned duties including transport of passengers and equipment to and from worksites.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:  Heavy physical exertion is frequently required in bending, lifting, and using hand and power tools in trail work. Examples of typical strenuous activity, include frequently lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 100 pounds, carrying and rolling rocks and logs, moving rocks of several tons with rock bars, using hammers to crush or shape rock, and using shovels extensively; frequently walks up to 20 miles daily; and must not have potential emergency medical problems that could complicate work in remote areas for extended periods of time.
WORKING CONDITIONS:  Must have ability to live and work effectively in isolated backcountry areas and in close contact with small numbers of people.  Incumbent must live and work out-of-doors on projects including mountainous terrain up to 14,000 feet in elevation and in all extremes of weather.  Trail work is dusty and hazardous conditions may exist when moving rock, working in and around rock slide areas, explosives, falling and bucking trees, and machinery.
AREA INFORMATION/HOUSING INFORMATION:  Bandelier National Monument is comprised of over 32,817 acres, including a designated wilderness area of 23,267 acres and an 800-acre detached archeological section. The Monument was created to preserve the numerous archeological features of a late prehistoric period, which represents the transition of the Pueblo Indians from the prehistoric Ancestral Puebloan to modern traditions. Annual visitation exceeds 200,000. The Monument is located 45 miles from Santa Fe, 32 miles from Espanola, and 12 miles from Los Alamos. Elevation ranges from 5,300 to 10,199 feet with headquarters located at 6,000 feet. For more information, see the park website: www.nps.gov/BAND. Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement, Friday, May 05, 2017.  Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sectors.
QUALIFICATIONS: To be eligible for this position, you must possess the qualifying specialized experience and/or education as well as selective factors as described in the occupational/assessment questionnaire and as outlined below.
WG-5: Applicants must be physically fit and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. A specific length of time and experience is not required; however you must be able to demonstrate through experience shown in your written application, that you possess sufficient knowledge, skill and ability to perform the duties of the position without more than normal supervision. Examples of experience for this position include: Specialized experience that demonstrates the ability to perform trail maintenance duties, leveling surfaces, removing roots and rocks, installing rock and log drainage structures, installing and cleaning water bars and steps, selecting proper location, angle and slope in installation. Selecting appropriate materials for a specific location and installing according to accepted trail practices. Installing water bars in trail areas and installed posts.  Installing stepping stones at creek crossing where bridges cannot be constructed.  Safely and effectively use hand power tools to include rock bar, jackhammer, chainsaws, hammer, carpentry tools, shovel, rake, axe, etc.   All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. You must meet level 2 on the screen out factor/element and an average of level 2 on all factors/elements in the occupational assessment questionnaire.

Requirements
1. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
2.  Applicants must possess a valid state drivers license. This position requires that you operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. A valid state drivers license is required.
