Duties

This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. The major duties listed below represent the full performance level of GS-7. At the GS-6 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-7. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds.
Employee will serves as a Biological Science Laboratory Technician (Animal) within the Office of Research and Development (ORD) Service, Veterinary Medical Unit (VMU) located at the Veterans Healthcare System in support of the Brooklyn and New York Campuses, NY. This position is responsible for the overall care, safety and well-being of research animals housed in the VMU ensuring living conditions of animals are maintained at a level which will contribute to their health and comfort. Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following:
· Coordinates the husbandry, pre- and post-animal surgery care and animal housing for bio-medical science projects. Implements comprehensive monitoring programs of several species of animal subjects in order to prevent, detect, and document violations of all laws and regulations for the control and eradiation of infectious, contagious, communicable diseases, parasites, and disease vectors.
· Animal Care: feeds and waters animals, prepares special diets. Makes daily and routine observations of animals, recognizes and reports deviations from normal health status. Checks in new animals and sets up initial records. Weans and sexes animals in breeding colony. Manages transgenic and knock-out populations. Includes procedures that require special care such as aseptic techniques in a pathogen free colony.
· Record Keeping: Maintains census records by room and investigator. Accuracy is very important as these records are the basis for per diem charges. Monitors usage of supplies and notifies supervisor to ensure can be ordered in a timely manner. Maintains records for animal care, feeding, treatment, disposal, and environmental monitored. Maintains records of controlled substance use. Schedules and coordinates use of animal procedure rooms.
· Equipment: Maintains orderly and sanitary conditions throughout the VMU. Cleans cages, racks, pans, floors, and other areas (walls, trash, barrels, ancillary rooms). Operates various types of animal research equipment (ventilated housing units, cage washer, bottle washer, autoclaves, etc.) correctly. Oversees quality control procedures on equipment and microbiological monitoring of animal rooms/cages.
· Technical Assistance: Administers medical treatment according to protocol specifications. Humanely and safely restrains animals for research and clinical staff. Collects specimens (blood, urine, body fluids, tissue samples) for chemical or histological examination. Prepares animals for experimental procedure to include anesthetizations, surgical preparation and post mortem examinations.
· Offers guidance and support to employees and research staff in the absence of VMU supervisor.
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed September 30, 2020). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to a 4 year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday-Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm; may require working weekends
